New Topic: Cell Phones

I am often amazed at the coincidences I see in the timing of several newspaper articles. Yesterday, while reading the NYTimes, I spotted an Op-Ed piece on why cell phones should be banned from schools. It included a plea to the parents fighting the school board about cell phones on campus. Then less than an hour later I am reading this article on the front page of the LATimes called, "Do Cell Phones Fuel Teen Angst?" What happens if you don't have a cell phone? Check out both pieces plus the cartoon and give me your feedback.

That was funny. Honestly they did the study in another country on why it's good.
Seriously though, I get using cellphones for emergencies. Yet most students just chat and text during school because they are bored, BUT in doing so they miss important lessons and end up failing horribly on tests and on the ordinary work.
Should they be banned? I think they should not be allowed to be used at all, until after or before school.
Hell let's say that they can bring their phones, but have to turn it into the teacher when they come to class and get it back after, so the teachers know they aren't using it during class and they can use it when they aren't in class instead.
P.S. Thanks for hand-delivering my Chicken Burger Ms. Henry
i think it's interesting how they want to ban cellphones from schools. i don't really think they should because there are some times where there are real emergencies that don't really require police and ambulances, and if you call through the school, it doesn't always go through-- i know from experience. it's a lot easier to communicate with other people with cellphones as well. students do text and chat when they're bored, but if the teacher has a routine and is truly serious about what they want to do with their class, the students will listen. my first period teacher is very serious with us; he always has since the first day of school. most students goof off in class and stuff, and sometimes don't listen, but in our class, it's totally silent. everyday, all the time. the only sounds are the scratching of pencils on paper, pages turning, and the voices of the teacher and the occasional question or response of a student. our teacher just had something about him that told us that we weren't to mess with him. i think that's what every teacher needs. more confidence and authority over their students. then, the technology issues with the students wouldn't be so bad. i just think that they shouldn't be used in the classroom.
The use of cell phones at school are high. Students probably do use their cells more than a book. There is nothing wrong with calling the school to reach your child. I don't own a cell and my life is just perfect. I could use a cell though.
My high school building in Salt Lake had the signal blocking thing. That way, kids didn't have any kind of connection to text or call in the middle of class. You would have to step outside with your phone.
I don't see the point of texting anyone at school because you will just see them during passing period. It's such a waste of time to sit there and text someone in the same class as you or in the next room. Write them a note or something.
Parents should limit the use of cells with their kids. My mom used to let me take it to school, but when I got home she took it away. If my grades were bad or if I had a lot of missing assignments she would keep it.
Cell phones are a symbolism of social statis. Just like clothes, they tell other people if you're COOL or RICH.
A way of controlling the use of phones in the class is first announcing or reminding them to put away their phones. If the teacher catches tehm, then they take it away.
just a quick questioned, why do you think clothes and cells show you are cool, Brittany? and can you give a definition of cool.
Don't forget to read the study of cell phones and the connection to teenage depression.
that was funny..i think if our school ban cellphones everybody won't be really sad because they cant TEXT message
The idea to ban cellphones from schools, is a fairly good idea, but kids do need cellphones for emergency uses, and calling the school dosen't always go through, so it's better if kids have their cell phone with them.If techers are so serious about banning cellphones in classrooms, they should be more serious and enforce their class rules more, so that kids know the consequences of not following the class rules. Then many students won't use their cellphones in class and they'll use it after class has finished.
I agree with Ricky. i think that cell phones should only be used for emergencies, and not for playing with or for useing them in class.
i think that the people saying that cell phones are bad for kids are only saying that because they havent experienced that many kids with cell phones when they were a kid and they think that it is over wellming to see kids on the phone alot. they make it sound like every teenage kid that has a cell phone is depressed or bored, but i think that a majority of theses kids are not depressed or bored they just like to tak on the phone and text cuz they like to talk to their friends.
before the cell there was the paper note and its still commonly used today. banning cellphones won't do anything no matter what methods are used because the means of communiction will change. the effort seems futile kind of like trying to kill world poverty: no matter the effort someon will have more money if eaven a dollar. cellphone are commonly used today by teens because as an instinct we have a fear of falling behind and no longer being in the info loop. there are other things the schools have been trying to ban for years like gum(even if they have a plausible reason which they do)and its still floting around in our mouths still at large.
teens with depression that talk on their cell continuesly do so because they are insecure and in pain for them its therapy a way to let go weather or not it works. they rely more on thier friends than their parents becoming more independent. cells are just a way to keep in touch.
the carton with teh lemmings was comical and the point came acrost strong. we arent paying atention an therefore we shal plunge into darkness or death. people in a car on the cellphone are as good as drunk. nowadays when someones incapable of driving you assume they're on the phone oposed to being old or drunk. with eveything new theres a danger as well as a benefit.
The blog is now closed for bonus points. Mrs. Henry
