Something New

I was checking out Netflix last week to see what new DVDs I might want to put in my queue. Most of what was coming out that week looked too serious or not really worth the time spent to watch. Then I saw one movie I'd like to see, but I will wait to rent with my mom in Kansas next month. (She's a big fan of romantic comedies and the actor, Simon Baker) Still, I couldn't resist at least checking out the trailer for Something New. After seeing it, I couldn't help but connect it with Romeo and Juliet. If you've seen the movie, let me know if the themes are similar to what we have been talking about. (But please don't totally ruin the movie for me by telling me all of the plot.) If you haven't seen the movie, check out the trailer and let me know what you think.

from watching the previews...i can really connect romeo and juliet with this movie. the black girl represents juliet, the white guy (romeo), the other black guy her friends bring in(paris) and the two families against the two's relationship(montagues and capulets). everyone is agaisnt the two's relationship, so they try to bring someone else in to change her mind, which ends up not working. i think that deception, fate and love is shown in this movie.
i totally agree with kassie.she basically took the words out of my mouth (or should i say off of the tips of my fingers and the keyboard)! the black girl knows she loves the white guy even though she's not supposed to. everyone is against their relationship and is trying to break them up. the families inquire about their mental health (sorta), and they try to make her stick to the "usual". they don't realize that change is good. there was her friend too that told the black girl to pass the black guy to her if she didn't want him. seems like a cool movie to me (i just watched the previews).
i think that this movie is exactly like Romeo and Juliet. it shows how oppisites really do attract. the girl knows exactly what she wants in a guy, but falls for someone who is the complete oppisite of what she wants, and is a diffrent race.
This movie looks like it is off the chain (slang for- This movie looks cool). I would definitely get this or go watch it. But to stick to the topic, this movie totally connects with Romeo and Juliet. Like Kassie said, each character in the movie seems to replace a character in the book. From experience, there are families that don't accept the fact that their child wants to marry outside of their own race. I'm not saying interracial marriages are bad, but the fued between the family and the girl(sanaa) is just like Romeo and Juliet. My advice...
Take chances. If you know what you want, go and get it.
The movie connects to Romeo and Juliet because of the culture clash. In the movie a black girl falls in love with a white boy and in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo falls in love with Juiet, in Romeo and Juliet culture isn't the issue but the family feud is and in the movie, culture clash and the disapproval of the family are both issues for them. The commom theme that you can figure out from the movie and Romeo and Juliet is that, you can't help who you fall in love with, the race, family background dosen't matter.
any chance any of you thought this movie was inspired by romio and juliet. that there was just a new twist put to the plot when they had different races together in a romance. that it also sparks the comedy with the couple who faces an akwardness and lack of knowledge when they are encountering each others culture. thats why we laugh because we know that akwardness; we know the oddities of the world. we laugh at those in a situation we wish not to expierence.
we mourned for romio and juliet because what they had was true, poetic, and had a sense of time that helped keep the tone dramatic. there where a few laughable parts so maybe this film has been made different: more laughter than drama. Is that the tone for today; watch a movie for adventure and comedy; watch a classic play or soap opera for suspence and drama?
I think the comments about the trailer have been exhausted by the 6 posts. So this post is closed unless you have seen the entire movie and want to comment on more connections with it.
