Music Connections and Hip-Hop
Well, it was disappointing to see that so few of you posted on a blog that really didn't require much reading. Even if you blogged, most of you didn't provide me with any musical connections. Then this morning as I was reading the front page of The Washington Post, I understood what might be happening.
Check out the Op-Ed piece called, "Hip-Hop's Tough-Guy Romance" and let me know what you think about Mr. Asim's opinion on hip-hop lyrics. Remember because this is hip-hop, some lyrics may be politically incorrect. (Bear in mind my posting them in this article doesn't mean I approve of the use of derogatory/inflammatory language.)
So I know I will surprise most of you with this blog. I am a big fan of alternative music. As I listen to the newest wave of British musicians, I seem to hear so many lyrical connections to the pieces I teach. How many of you have really listened to the lyrics in Arctic Monkeys' hit, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor". Did you catch the allusions? If not check out the lyrics. Or maybe you want to watch the video to hear what's playing in Mrs. Henry's CD.

What music are you listening to that connects with either the play, Romeo and Juliet, or the themes we have been studying? Send me some links, if you know them. Let me know your thoughts about how music connects with the play.

this song is thy opposite of romeo and juliet. this guys passion for a women matched romeo's passion for juliet. thy women is as well the opposite of juliet, she gives out coold shots that put "romeo" is agony.
i agree to the fact that this song is opposite to romeo and juliet because it was mention; also, do you really think its necessary to mention women is as well the opposite of juliet?
the woman is rosiland and romio is mooning after her to no avail. he wants her badly eaven though he knows he cant have her. depression sweeps romio off his feet and the world has turned around to watch his agony.
remember romio and juliet met on the dancefloor and romio went to the party to see rosiland. maybe this sog has a double meaning.Romio wants rosiland but instead he finds juliet and their relationship gets going. that is probobly what the first stanza is referring to.
what was the refference to capulets and montegues exactly for? could this be about some age old fued that still is raging on between two groups of is it some other reference?
romio has no clue what rosiland wants except that she doesnt want him. as a result he tries to strain to understand what she want in order to win rosiland over.
you have said enough for me not to mention anything that might be worthy of a post.
Everyone, You are not telling me anything about the music you listen to that might relate/connect to Romeo and Juliet.
well i do listen to a song called guilty try to see it mrs. henry i'll send you a link. the song is called the rasmus guilty.
this song is like rosiland tellin tromeo to stop flirting with her and to leave her alone
This song called "Never Leave Me Alone" by Nate Dogg reminds me of Romeo and Juliet.
Be sure to include the new article on "Hip-Hop" in your posts if you want credit.
The new article on "Hip-Hop" I think shows how no a days everyone is trying to be something there not which causes them to be misunderstood by others
I think that the hip hop article is showing that all people, no matter how tough a guy may appear to be, has room to be romantic and talk about love. you may think rappers only talk about drugs, sex, violence, etc...but not all, like LL cool J " i need love". it may not sound like a typical love song by stevie wonder or the temtations, but it can havr the same effect on you.

The tough guy act shows how much culture has changed. Twenty years ago there was actually decent hiphop music around if people continue the downward spiral what would our culture be like in another 20 years? Could we go back to having a more courteous society or will there be no respect left to feed upon?
i would like some plausible answers.
mr cool seems redundant that wont earn him any points.
why does society change what other influences make it so? do we have the most influence being the younger generation or are we controlled by something else? I bet the media affects perspective alot.
HIP-HOP'S TOUGH GUY ROMANCE:
Mr. Asmin's opinon on hip-hop lyrics was misunderstood at first. He thinks that hip-hop artists lyrics don't express love enough and should be more decent. He compares T.I's work to Stevie Wonders and sees that both of the artists express their feeling of love but not in the smae manner. T.I is more explict while Stevie Wonder is more decent but they both express love. He realises that as time goes by people grow up, become more matured and take their responsiblities seriously, and Mr. Asmin notices the mention of that in both Stevie Wonders and T.Is song, but just not in the same manner.
society's stereotyping has a great affect on what goes on in life. i think that many people, especially men (of all ages) have the idea in their minds that if they have any respect for women, or if that they dare be courteous (god forbid!) they will be looked down upon and be made fun of for being "old school." in about twenty years, WE will be considered "old school!" this is all started by us too! we affect the media, which affect the "trends" and the "trends," then affect us. it's a neverending cycle. that's what that article on hip-hop in the washington post is trying to communicate to us. what do the rest of you think???
mr. cool, your ignorance is unbound so say something decent or shut up. TO Tora's post, i do think we are being controlled by our favorite indecent musicains. The sexually immoral video's shown on T.V. are ludachris, these are affecting younger generations and as well teaching the younger generation that it is ok to be bad, to join gangs, to be physically tough so you could show off to people, in a sense these messages are not directing this generation to a successful future, but to a more violent future with drugs, weapons, and stupidity.
I actually am listening to LL Cool J's song right now. I actually am a huge HIP HOP and RAP fan. I grew up listening to this music. I couldn't actually say that TI is with a SIGNIFICANT other because who would call someone the love a "BITCH." I would have to agree more with Pritisha in 4th period. Both all three artists have different ways of expressing love. Romeo expresses his love through action and poetry which can also be accompanied by music. After all, music is poetry, right? Another artist whose lyrics are very much of "Love" is BABYFACE. His song titled "Lovers" quotes "The time is right for love, it's not too late
The feeling's so strong to be as one this special way." It did not take long for Romeo and Juliet to decide to what they wanted. To them it wasn't too late or too late. They just did the dang thing.
This artical did not gives a better insight on how this generation is behaving, the intolerance shows. most rappers are not giving the young generation a healthy message, eminem, the actual decent rapper who raps about his life and regrets gives a life lesson. When you watch a rapper on T.V. as in 50 cent or more specifically G-Unit you see sex, its not just with them but with others obviously, in any case you see sex, which is not even appropriate, this kind of behavior should not be even shown because it gets people thinking in ways prohibited by law. When you want to listen to a song just remember what truly is good.
Another one of my personally favorite songs to go with Romeo and Juliet is performed by the late Luthet Vandross. It is titled "The Night I Fell In Love." It may also go along with the theme fate;"The stars were shining brighter than most of the time. Then love came out of nowhere..The stars were in your eyes." This quote can generally explain the night that they had first met. In the book it says they were "star-crossed lovers," but they did find love at first sight and love did come out of nowhere. Romeo's real intention at the Capulet party was to see his Rosaline. Istead he foung a new love;a love with his Juliet.
I hate people like that. They think Hip-Hop is all about being a thug or a gangsta. Theirs more to it than that, and theirs more than just being a tough dude in hip-hop. The writer of that artical is just concentrating on the on the rapers who act tough.PLUS TI'S NOT EVEN A HIP-HOP ARTIST, HE'S A RAPPER!!!!(thiers a difference)
I believe that Mr. Asmin is only judging one rapper for all. There is other good hip-hop, R&B or Rap songs that are about love and dont have any bad language like "A Room in my Heart' by Faith Hill, or one of my favorite songs "All my life" by KC and Jojo. In all my life it says, "Said I promised to never fall in love with a stranger,
You're all I'm thinking of" this happened to Juliet. She never thought she would fall inlove so quick and she didnt have marriage anywhere close in mind at that moment but love is sudden and it took them by surprise. One of the connections i found with the song that Mrs.Henry told us to listen to which by the way i thought it was an ok song "I bet i look better in the dance floor" is that Romeo and Juliet saw each other in the party in the dance floor and i thought that was really interesting.
This artical is about a guy who is too much in love whith his girlfriend to go hang out with his guy friends. And one of his guy friends thinks thats dumb but then realizes that it is not that dumb after all. he realizes that it is not that dumb because he hears many rappers talking about how much they like a women and how they did the same thing and not hang out with thir guy friends and just be with there girl. i really think what this artical is trying to say is that no mater who you are; a big famous tough rapper or a regular joe it is ok to talk about love. and the reason that they dont is because that are looked at as a big taugh guy that has all the girls money and drugs and they cant talk about is because it will make them look soft and that dont want that.
This post is now closed for bonus points. Mrs. Henry
